Brian's Travel Suggestions

Brian lived in Portugal for four months. Throughout his time there, he has seen a lot of the country side, and these are just a few of his favourite places to go.

Sintra

A town located about an hour train ride West of Lisbon, known for it's castles, parks and views. Check out the Moorish Castle, the Sintra National Palace, Quinta da Regaleira or just walk around the city to experience it's beauty. Be sure to try a travesseiro and a queijada de Sintra while you are there!

Tomar

Just a two hour train ride North East of Lisbon, Tomar was constructed by the Knights Templar and that is reflected all over the town. Explore the Convento de Cristo, visit the beautiful churches, including the Church of Santa Maria do Olival where several Templars are buried. You can also walk along a nearby aqueduct from the 17th Century.  There is a rumour that there is still some Templar treasure to be found in the city.

Lisbon

So many things to do in Lisbon, so here are a few that I recommend. Visit the Belem Tower (one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal), the Rua Augusta Arch (and the street that goes through it), Monument of the Discoveries (the Portuguese are very proud of their part in the Age of Discovery), Vasco da Gama Tower (tallest building in Portugal, costs 10 Euro to go up), the many museums and churches, including the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora where the royalty of Portugal are laid to rest.

Setubal

Just a 40min trip South from Lisbon lies Setubal. An important part of Protugal's fishing industry, be sure to try the Choco Frito (fried cuttlefish). You can walk along the shore, and if you're lucky, see some dolphins. You can visit the Castelo de São Filipe for free and check out the beautiful tiles. If you want to go to one of the beaches, be sure to get there early!  Parking spots go fast.
